DB Lernwelt E-Learning Platform | Deutsche Bahn AG
The Deutsche Bahn AG needed a central learning platform to serve 290,000 annual learners across their extensive training portfolio. The platform should use gamification elements to make learning more efficient and entertaining through e-learning and blended learning approaches. With intuitive, simple handling and modern, clean design, it should optimize knowledge transfer, seamlessly integrate employee qualification into daily work, and promote individual development—all while being accessible anytime and from any device.
Approach
As the lead UX/UI Designer for the DB Lernwelt project, my approach focused on creating an accessible, user-centered learning system:
User Research and Learning Strategy
Research with diverse employee groups revealed key insights about learning preferences and workplace integration challenges. These findings guided the development of personalized learning journeys tailored to different roles within Deutsche Bahn.
Platform Architecture
The learning architecture was structured to accommodate various formats while ensuring content remained discoverable and relevant. My design organized training across railway operations, infrastructure, vehicle technology, and business skills categories.
Cross-Platform Design
The responsive interface addressed the diverse contexts in which employees would access content—from office environments to field locations. The design ensured consistent usability across desktop workstations, tablets, and mobile devices.
Performance Tracking
Intuitive dashboards visualized learning progress and achievements through carefully designed information display systems, motivating continued engagement.
Results
DB Lernwelt successfully transformed Deutsche Bahn's employee development approach through user-centered design. The intuitive navigation and progress tracking UI increased learning engagement across all digital literacy levels. The responsive interface design ensured consistent usability from office workstations to field locations, effectively integrating qualification into daily workflows. The visual design system established new UX standards that influenced subsequent digital initiatives across Deutsche Bahn's ecosystem.
